PUNE: Working by day, attending school by night left 18-year olds Ganesh Ramchandra Dhebe, Ganesh Mhetre and Sagar Ladu Kamble with little time or energy to attend a regular junior college or any sort of assistive tutorial.
Nevertheless, say the three commerce students from Saraswati Mandir Trust`s Poona Night School and Junior College, they expected to do well.
1x1 polls
Dhebe stood first in the college with 71.2 per cent, at second place was Mhetre with 69.83 per cent, closely followed by Kamble with 69.5 per cent.
It is a success story carefully scripted by hard work, and painstakingly nurtured by the boys` determination. While Dhebe works in a bookstore, Mhetre is employed as a waiter in a hotel and Kamble works in a provident fund consultant`s office.
All three share a common background, besides the need to work to support their family income: Dhebe`s and Kamble`s parents work on a farm, while Mhetre`s parents are daily wage labourers. But all of them are confident that they will see their dreams come to fruition. While Dhebe and Mhetre want to be chartered accountants, it`s a career in law for Kamble who believes law with a commerce background is a win-win combination.
The boys attribute the lion`s share of their success to their teachers. "They gave us every help, patiently clarifying our doubts and helping us build on our strengths," said Dhebe.
Ask them if they have any message for youngsters in similar circumstances, and each one comes up distinctive pointers.
For Dhebe, persistence is the one quality that can see one through in every situation. "I would say, no matter what, never, ever give up. Stay focussed on all that you want to achieve and keep working," he said.

While Kamble chipped in: "Education is the only way towards a bright future. With a proper degree and training, you can go places."
Mhetre added that augmenting one`s English-speaking and writing skills would go a long way in the days to come. "It is the language of business and commerce. And knowing good English is an important value-addition to your resume. It is worth your time to invest that extra effort in familiarising oneself with the language," he said.
Avinash Takawale, in-charge of the Junior College, said, "All the boys are sincere and methodical in their approach. They have good, analytical minds and are very hard-working. It was amazing to see them come to college regularly despite a hard day`s grueling work. They are self-motivated and eager to learn. They are bound to do well whatever they choose to do."
